If you look at the NFL standings after the second week, you will see the Eagles sitting at the top with a record of 2-0. Only 5 other teams are undefeated. Sounds like the Philadelphia Eagles are one of the teams to beat. However both of their wins have been ugly and been one point victories. A win is a win, but a one point victory against the Cleveland Browns does not make you elite. A one point victory against the Baltimore Ravens is an accomplishment though. At this point in the season the win/loss record does not tell the whole picture.
So far the Eagles season really has been a story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The Eagles explosive offense leads the league in total offense with a staggering 471 yards per game. They also have nine turnovers while playing only eight quarters, ouch! Michael Vick has been largely responsible for being too loose with the ball. Vick has thrown six interceptions so far. But, in both victories it has been Vick leading a game winning drive. Michael Vick started the fire, but he was able to put it out in both wins. Does that make him an elite or even a good quarterback? The offense can only go as far as number 7 takes them.
While the offense has struggled with ball security, the defense has really been a different story. The defensive unit is currently ranked 4th in total defense, only allowing 267.5 yards per game. The run defense has been good thus far. The secondary has lived up to the hype this year as they are currently tied for the league lead in interceptions at five. Demeco Ryans looks like he has returned to his pro bowl form and really anchored the middle of this defense.
Although the Eagles have struggled to win both their games this season, they did still win the games. The defense appears to be legitimate and here to stay. The offense is really where the question marks are heading into week 3. Eagles team trainer announced this morning that Center Jason Kelce will be sidelined for the entire season with an ACL and MCL injury. Jeremy Maclin was taken off the field on a cart after injuring his hip again, no word on if he will play this week. Vick needs to take care of the ball and avoid injury. With all the question marks and struggles so far, the birds are still undefeated. The turnovers need to be addressed and the already thin offense will need to stay healthy, but the Eagles are a legitimate contender and should win 10 or 11 games this season. Despite the somewhat rocky start, the Eagles remain confident and will push towards a 3-0 start against the Arizona Cardinals this week.
