As the Philadelphia Eagles enter the sixth week of a fast moving NFL season, their Head Coach Andy Reid has displayed unfaltering strength and resolve. On August 5, 2012 during training camp, Andy Reid got the worst news any parent could receive. His son, Garrett Reid was found dead in his dorm room. Garrett Reid passed away at the early age of 29. Coach Andy Reid took a couple of days to mourn the loss with his family. The team and the community rallied around their coach. Coach Andy Reid returned to the team determined to not let the tragedy derail his focus nor the team's.
Today marks 66 days since Garrett Reid's death, and Coach Andy Reid has been a rock. It would have been very easy for Coach Reid to let this season get away from him due to off the field tragedy. Instead Andy Reid has been instrumental in the team's ability to win close games in the fourth quarter. Sure the Pittsburgh Steelers game got away from the Eagles, but close wins against the Browns, Ravens, and Giants have shown Coach Reid and the team's mental toughness.
There is not much Coach Andy Reid can do about Michael Vick's fumbling issues when he tucks the ball and runs. The last two games the offensive protection has been a focus for the Eagles. Vick has not thrown an interception during that time. Coach Andy Reid has helped hold the season together. The lofty expectations entering the year placed tremendous pressure on the team and the coaching staff. Reid has steered the team through the first five games to a 3-2 record. The fans cries for Nick Foles, the media scrutiny about the close wins, and an inexperienced defensive coordinator have not phased Andy Reid. He remains the calming presence amongst the team.
The loss of Garrett Reid will never be forgotten. Coach Andy Reid and the Eagles remain focused to dedicating this season in his memory with a Super Bowl trophy.
