Philadelphia Eagles starting quarterback and national icon Michael Vick has confirmed that he and his family own a dog.  After being convicted on dogfighting related charges, Vick served 18 months in federal prison.  After his release Vick was placed on probation and part of his probation prohibited him from owning a dog.  What Michael Vick did was awful, but the man served his time and completed the terms of his probation.  Now, Vick has the right to own a dog just like every other American citizen.   Many fans, organizations, and media outlets have expressed their discontent about Vick owning a dog.  A couple of days ago Vick refused to acknowledge or answer any questions related to him owning a dog.  However he did release this statement yesterday:

"I understand the strong emotions by some people about our family's decision to care for a pet…As a father, it is important to make sure my children develop a healthy relationship with animals. I want to ensure that my children establish a loving bond and treat all of God's creatures with kindness and respect. Our pet is well cared for and loved as a member of our family"

Since his arrival in Philadelphia Vick has been a model citizen.  He volunteers his time with animal organizations.  He has changed his lifestyle and become more of a family man.  He has had no issues with the law since his time in federal prison.  Vick made a mistake and since the time of his punishment, he has done his very best to atone for his cruelty.  In Vick's statement he went to on to state his desire to make a positive change in society, not just his family.

"This is an opportunity to break the cycle…To that end, I will continue to honor my commitment to animal welfare and be an instrument of positive change"

Michael Vick paid a heavy price for his crimes.  He has acknowledged his mistakes and taken steps to prevent others from making these same mistakes.  The man seems to have been reformed by prison and he deserves a second chance.  Michael Vick and his family owning a dog should be viewed as just another step in his reformation.  Now Michael Vick just needs to translate his recent growth as a person to growth as a TURNOVER FREE quarterback.
