There have not been many bright spots for the Philadelphia Eagles this year as the team went from a promising contender to start the season to one of the worst teams in the NFL. But last Sunday Night's game against the Cowboys did have some positive takeaways for the future of the team. With nothing to play for but pride, the last four games of the season will be a good chance for the Eagles to evaluate their younger talent and hopefully identify future contributors.
Nick Foles had has his best outing of the season completing 22 of 34 passes for 251 yards and a touchdown. While he hasn't been tearing up the field, Foles has started to get a better hold on the offense and looked much more confident in his throws against a Cowboys defense that ranks 10th in the league against the pass. And with the confirmation that he will be the starter for the rest of the season, Foles now has the opportunity to show the organization that he is the future to the team.
Bryce Brown kept his mojo rolling with his second monster game in a row as the feature back with LeSean McCoy sitting on the sidelines with a concussion. Brown went for 169 yards on 24 carries with two touchdowns. Brown has really tried to make a name for himself with his two big performances coming on nationally televised feature games and has shown he has many of the tangible skills needed to be a star back in the league. His one problem has been ball security as he has lost three fumbles over those two games with each one coming at very costly times. With Brown performing like he has, it would be doubly smart for the Eagles to wait to bring McCoy back on the field. They would be saving McCoy from taking unnecessary punishment while at the same time seeing if Brown can keep up his pace against a Tampa Bay Bucs team that ranks first against the run.
It is clear that owner Jeffrey Lurie has decided it is time to turn the page with this Eagles team and look forward to the 2013 season. These promising rookies will have no better time to showcase their abilities in a relatively low pressure situation as everyone already classifies this year as a failure. With the entire organization's future unclear and a new coaching staff assuredly on the horizon, the team's young's players have a lot things to play for, even if the playoffs is not one of them.
